Remembering Brigid

‘Remembering Brigid’ is an original performance of storytelling, folklore, traditional music and song which sheds light on Brigid - goddess, saint and Scottish and Irish cultural icon. Susanna Orr Holland singer and storyteller, storyteller Kate Walker and violinist Morag Brown perform an original ceilidh sharing tales of Brigid in ancient myth, folk tales, song and folk lore. Exploring how we have individually or collectively expressed hope and grief, coped with the mundane, related to our seasons and landscape and used our stories and traditions to try to understand or make sense of our social mores, expectations, dreams, losses, behaviours and experiences.

The performance evokes Brigid through both Gaelic and English music, poetry and story and is inspired and informed by material from archive recordings, old texts and academic research. Painting a fresh way of seeing this cultural icon.

Adrift

The story of a young man who witnesses the decline of his community and feels isolated and severed from his community, to him it seems the people are losing their purpose. Through his grandfather he is being taught the traditional ways of boat-building and this seems to contain something with more substance than the new way of life that has taken over. But when his grandfather dies the young man is set adrift on a journey that brings him more in touch with his inner self and the skills that may save his community. This performance is inspired by the stories of Neil Gunn and mythological tales of initiation. Told by Owen Pilgrim and music by Susanna Orr Holland

Free Fringe 10/11 George IV Bridge

Every day from 3rd-24th August (except Mondays eg. 5th, 12th, 19th August) from 2:30 - 3:30.

Singer-songwriter Susanna takes the listener from the Hebrides to the deserts of Iraq, and onto a nameless street corner. Using the Indian harmonium and guitar she performs original songs, Scottish ballad and compositions of Indian Raga. Yet her main instrument is her three octave spellbinding voice and is often compared to Lisa Gerard and Kate Bush. This one woman show is like a meeting of east and the west, the rational and the intuitive, the conscious and the unconscious.
